When your relationship ended you probably received advice from friends and family members regarding how to move forward. It may be that some suggested that you call your ex and follow him or her in order to force a meeting. On the other hand you may have been told that you are better off and you should find someone new. People offer advice because they want to help; they do not like seeing you hurt. But much of the advice you receive is not advice you should use. You can get your ex back but there are steps involved.
1) Take time for the break up to sink in
2) Take time for you
3) Thoroughly evaluate the relationship
4) Know what you want
5) Begin working on the actual making up process
Initially you may be totally devastated about the break up. Or you could be completely angry. Your reactions really depend on the circumstances and what exactly led to the break up. It seems that the break up that appear from nowhere are often the hardest to accept and adjust to.
Regardless of what has happened you do need to allow time for the concept of being broken up to sink in. This will change your lifestyle to a degree. For some people this is a very sad adjustment. Give yourself the time you need for this phase. But I do suggest that you set a limit such as no more than a week.
Next you will need to take time for yourself. Make this phase as fun and interesting as possible. Get involved in things that you have not had time for. Renew interests in past hobbies, enjoy your family and friends. Reading a self-improvement book might be helpful during this phase. The next step can actually be done at the same time you are working on this phase. Allow yourself to honestly consider your ex and the relationship you had.
Consider whether or not it was what you really wanted. Decide if your ex is truly the person that can fulfill your expectations in a relationship. You might even find it helpful to make of a list of what your ideal mate would be like and then see how your ex compares to that list. If you decide that your ex is still the one for you then it is time to go to work on the making up process.
Begin slowly. A brief phone call just to say hello and ask how he or she is doing is a good start. Remember to keep it brief. Even if your ex lingers on the phone call you need to cut it short. You can use the excuse that you need to get back to whatever new hobby or interests you have become involved in. However, you can end the call with a plan for another.
If meeting is mentioned by your ex do not jump on the invitation. Instead, say that you will call them back to let them know. This does a couple of things, first it gives you time to decide if you are really ready to meet with your ex face to face, and it gives the impression that you are not sitting around doing nothing just because you are broken up. If you decide to meet with him or her be sure to keep things on a friendly basis for awhile. Getting intimate right away would be a bad decision.
Your goal is to build a lasting relationship this time around. Work on the friendship first. Be open and honest with one another and respect each other. That is what friendship is about. You already have the love so all you need to add is whatever is missing.
